There is a buzz in the halls of NS that is hard to ignore. With girls volleyball and cheer already bringing home state championships,
the basketball team is currently chasing a triple crown for the girls’ athletic programs.
This multi-sport success has created a culture of winning that new head coach Alan Jacobson has seamlessly tapped into, turning \
hope into a reality.
Winning is a big deal, and the NS girls basketball team is making it a habit. With nine victories by 20 points or more this season,
they have proven that they don't just want the win, they want to control every second of the 32-minute clock.
That success along with the success of other sports have the team feeling optimistic.
“We could take state,” sophomore Mariah Schlappi said, “I want to always have that mindset.”
This year's success with Jacobson is impressive, especially given that last year, the team finished with a 7-17 record.
“We’ve been bad in the past; it doesn’t mean we can’t ever be good,” Schlappi said.
In Utah's Division 3A Rankings, NS is currently ranked second, behind Delta High School, with a record of 15-5 and zero region
losses.
The girls attribute much of that to coach Jacobson.
“He’s expected a lot out of us, and we’ve risen to it,” senior Elsie Bailey said.
This year's success should be given to the girls, but also to the coaches. Being a new coach isn’t always easy, but Jacobson is
helping the girls improve a lot.
“He works on everyone, everyone’s individual skills and needs,” Bailey said.
While Jacobson’s coaching style is sometimes more aggressive, with him often yelling at them, many of the girls think highly of him
because he pushes them to be better in every way.
“It looks like a rough way from an outside perspective, but he is also like, ‘I know you guys are better than this,’” Bailey said.
A major key to their record has been ball security. Under Jacobson, the team has significantly cut down on turnovers compared to
last season. By valuing every possession, they ensure that their opponents rarely get 'easy' buckets, forcing teams to play a perfect game just to keep pace.
“He has a lot higher intensity,” Schlappi said. "He focuses on the little things and all the little details.”
NS’s 15-5 overall record is impressive, but their 5-0 region record is perfect and places them firmly in first position in the 3A Region. This undefeated league run highlights not just their skill but their consistency and ability to perform when it matters most, creating a
significant gap between them and the rest of their regional rivals.
“They walk around with their heads up high,” Jacobson said, “not an arrogant look, but you can tell that they’re confident.”
