On Sat Jan. 24 the NS Cheer team took first place in State for the first time in NS history. Previously, cheer has not
had an official state competition, only becoming a sanctioned sport in state five years ago.
“I think this team went into the season hungry from the beginning. They have fought through very difficult
obstacles,” cheer coach Amber Kendall said, “including mentally and physically, and they fought it from the beginning.”
One obstacle the cheer team ran into was a serious injury to one of the cheerleaders earlier in the season.
“Our first competition was rough because I got a concussion, and it brought the team down because we had to
change our routines,” junior captain Jenna Christiansen said.
Another obstacle was the mentality the cheer team had after taking second to Juab in region. Juab had taken first
at state the last two years. During region the NS cheer team took first in cheer and dance, but lost to Juab in show, leading to Juab taking first overall.
“Show is weighted more because it includes stunts and tumbling. So even though we won Dance and Cheer, since
Juab won Show, they won overall,” Christiansen said.
Even though the team won two categories, it hurt their spirits leading up to State.
“When we took second to Juab, it was really disappointing because we worked so hard and it felt like it wasn’t good
enough,” junior captain Aubree Kendall said.
The cheer team put in their all, practicing at least three hours every other day and then sometimes practicing after
school.
Despite the region results, the cheer team let their setback push them further forward.
“Right after region we all kind of just changed, and we got in the mentality that we wanted to win,” Christiansen
said. “We all just clicked and became one team, and we all united as one, and that’s what helped us take state.”
The click wasn’t just felt by the cheer team, it was felt by the people who came there to support them as well.
“Before we stepped on the mat you could feel how much our crowd cared for us,” Aubree Kendall said. “And how
much everyone was into it and how much everyone wanted it. It just felt so good and so powerful.”
When the results were called, excitement flooded the cheer team as for the first time ever, they had won state.
“Just hearing them announce us as first at state was such a big deal for me because it felt like that second place
didn’t matter anymore,” Aubree Kendall said.
For coach Kendall, the trophy was just physical proof of what she had seen in her athletes all year long.
“They fought to the very last minute, win or lose, they always had a winning attitude,” coach Kendall said.
