After practice, all she wanted to do was go home. However, she knew she had to stay if she wanted to be great. Hit after hit, she could tell she
was getting better. Summer Johnson’s hard work was finally starting to pay off.
Johnson is one high school senior of the two on the team this year who started playing golf her freshman year. Her freshman year was the first
time she ever picked up a golf club, and since then she has improved dramatically from all the time she has put into it.
The NS girls golf program is versatile for anyone, no matter their skill level. Whether it is their first time trying, or they're already great, there is a
place for everyone. Many people think golfing is a boring sport, but it can be very enjoyable and exciting.
“When you ask most girls about if they want to play golf or something, their first response is, all that's so boring, but then, after their 1st couple
weeks of playing it, they're like, wow, this is actually really fun,” head coach Kolby Henrie said.
This season is different from other tournaments because there are more beginner girls going to tournaments than previous years. Despite this
change, the team has been doing well. They placed second at Manti, second at Juab, fourth at Emery, and second at Skyline. They are hoping to take 2nd in region, but doing this task won’t be easy. It would require everyone on the team to step up.
“I think we just need to try to stay motivated when we're at practice and focus on even our practice shots to see what we can learn from
them,” Johnson said.
Golf has also taught some of the girls lessons that spread into daily life just as much as they are impactful on the course.
“I've learned that to be very patient, you can have a really bad hole and it can either ruin your day or you can say all that happened and move
on,” senior Emma Evans said.
Evans and Johnson have been great leaders on the team by being good role models and helping the younger kids.
“Both me and Emma have given lots of rides to the other girls that don't have their licenses yet so they can get to practice, and also get
people going at practice before the coaches get there,” Johnson said.
Throughout their high school career, the seniors have made many memories that they are going to miss. However one of the nicest parts
about golf is that it doesn’t have to end after high school. It is a sport that can be played for a lifetime.
